If you frequent Tony’s Market on Glenoaks Boulevard in Burbank, you’ll surely run into a lovely gentlemen behind the counter. (Sorry Tony, you’re lovely too…today I’m talking about Steve.)
Steve Pahulick dons his Veteran’s cap as he proudly serves up sandwiches, slices bacon and stocks shelves.
He is 89 years old and spend his life as a butcher.
He moved to California in 1949 after the war and has been married 54 years.
Steve was there that day. He said “Seeing the surrender” has been one of his most memorable moments in life. That and standing at attention and saluting General Wainwright as he walked past that day after the surrender. “He looked like a broomstick.” General Wainwright had been held in prison camps at the hands of the Japanese for three years and came out thin and malnourished.
I’m sure there is so much more to this man’s story, but this week, I say stop in Tony’s Market and see if Steve’s there. Give him a handshake and say “Thank You.” He’s well deserving.
Tony’s Market is located at2813 N Glenoaks Blvd, Burbank, CA 91504
