There is a reason the word ‘Spectacular’ is used in the title of this event… it is spectacular!
Walking With Dinosaurs, The Arena Spectacular opened in Southern California at The Honda Center in Anaheim on Wednesday night, and it’s coming to Staples Center this week! (I have passes to giveaway!)

Knowing what I did about this production, I let the kids watch YouTube videos from the show, so they knew what it was going to be like. I also wanted to feel out my 4 year old daughter, knowing also that she might be a little too scared to take to something so enormous in size…pun intended.

Ultimately, I left the 4 year old at a friends house Wednesday night as the older two and I were privileged enough to come check out the show before it crawls into Staples Center September 11-14th.

This is the perfect show to take your young anthropologists to, or any child that loves dinosaurs…that’s most of them. You cannot escape the absolute realness of this production. Stegosaurus, TRex, Torosaurus, Raptor and many more. 10 species of dinos are represented in the show, and it’s simply jaw dropping real. There was not a quiet child in the house, and it’s perfectly ok with everyone! How many shows can you take your kids to where they can shout and scream and ooh and ahh and ask a million questions? This one, that’s for sure.

As the adult sitting next to the kids, I was absolutely blown away by things they surely weren’t paying attention to. The set design, the original score (which only makes it scarier), and the absolute breathtaking dinosaurs! They’re huge! Some are computer controlled, others, like the raptors and baby TRex are small enough for people to fit in, like puppets.

Sonny Tilders, designer of the dinos says, “To make it appear that these creatures are flesh and blood weighing six, eight or even 20 tons, we use a system called ‘muscle bags,’ made from stretch mesh fabric and filled with polystyrene balls, stretched across moving points on the body.  These contract and stretch in the same manner that muscle, fat, and skin does on real creatures. The puppeteers use ‘voodoo rigs’ to make many of the dinosaurs move.  They are miniature versions of the dinosaurs with the same joints and range of movement as their life-sized counterparts.  The puppeteer manipulates the voodoo rig and these actions are interpreted by computer and transmitted by radio waves to make the hydraulic cylinders in the actual dinosaur replicate the action, with a driver hidden below the animal, helping to maneuver it around the arena.”  Suited puppeteer specialists, who are inside the creatures, operate five of the smaller dinosaurs.”

This show is amazing. Both for kids and adults alike. You or your kids might want to run screaming from the arena, but let me encourage you…stay! If you’re brave, I would recommend sitting on the main floor of this show! But event the nosebleeds give you such an amazing view. Another tip… try sitting facing the show from the front, there is a flying dinosaur act that is breathtaking with a moving screen show behind it. The best seats would be straight on. But we were not straight on and still had a fantastic experience. My kids have already asked to go back this week!
