Leaving 1st lesson with guitar my mom gifted me.
She would have been so proud of me for getting it.
And she would have given me crap for letting it sit so long untouched.
I also bought a self-teaching book/CD set as well as a pretty stand. The book lasted a week, but I did teach myself Greensleeves before life with three kids took over rapidly and forced me to make decision between guitar and sleep.
Sleep wins every time. Sleep will always win. There was a time when sleep would never win and I could go and go and go, but once my body pushed out that first baby….sleep wins.
So there sat the guitar on that pretty stand for years, but my desire for learning never went away. I just knew that the right time would come and it did!
A little over a month ago, the opportunity to try some beginning guitar lessons with Hollywood Guitar Lessons here in Burbank came my way and instead of allowing my silly little kids (who sometimes complain about what’s for dinner, leave cupboards open in the kitchen and seriously leave more toothpaste inside the sink than they do inside their mouths) take these lessons from me, this mother said… “Nope, these lessons are mine!”
Instructor and owner Jason Land with student
Secretly, I was hoping Jason would tell me my hands were way too little and guitar playing wouldn’t be for me. You know, like maybe I had some freak defect that would prevent me from putting my hands through this misery? He never did. He just promised me that even if I spent 5-10 minutes a day at the very minimum, I’d get it.
I’m not sure I believed him.
But he was right.
Over that first week after my first lesson, I got it. And I’m telling you, I only practiced about 5-10 minutes a day. Not because I didn’t like it, but because, hey, I still have three kids and other work and a house to take care of. Life happens…but I could definitely find a little bit of time to squeeze in every single day to practice. I actually moved my guitar out of my bedroom and put it by my desk, which allowed me to keep it in mind and pick it up when I had a few minutes. This was a big help.
By the second week, although my left hand was hurting a bit and my fingertips were slightly numb, I was so excited to keep learning. I knew all of that would be temporary and hey, there’s got to be some kind of yoga for my wrist and fingers.
By the third week, I surprised myself at some of the basic things I could play and by my last lesson, I could play along with “I Love Rock and Roll using three basic chords.
My lessons are up, but I’m going to continue. There’s no way I can stop now!
Jason with kids at Roosevelt Elementary
Here’s what I’m going to tell you about Jason and why I recommend him…he loves to teach. When a teacher who knows the craft also loves to teach, the student will not fail. The student can be a 6 year old, a 16 year old or a 36 year old. If your teacher wants nothing more than to see you learn, the student will not fail.
Jason Land is dedicated. He has created a curriculum for learning guitar that has been proven over and over and over to teach beginners to play. Not only beginners, but students who’ve been with him for years. He as personally created a unique method to inspire the kids, called Guitar Ninjas™. Using somewhat of a martial arts approach, the kids start with a white pick and advance to different levels, until they ultimately earn their black pick.
Jason loves teaching so much, that he doesn’t even really perform on his own anymore. He can see a bigger picture of where his talents lie, and I would agree. I think Burbank..the Valley and SoCal is lucky to have such a dedicated, gifted teacher.
And even though my free lessons are over…I am absolutely going to continue learning with Jason. It’s one of the easiest decisions I’ve had to make in a while.
