Why do homeschoolers share their schedules and curriculum in public places sometimes?
Because it helps. Because we all like to see what each other is doing and this happens in real life too. I am constantly curious to see what my homeschool mom friends are doing with their kiddos, just out of curiosity.
And, because sometimes, some things don’t work. And you have to change things up and when you need to do that, you have to have some go-to’s in your head to look at. This is an absolute blessing of homeschool. (there are a lot of blessings with homeschool and some ‘curses’ too)
I’ll do another post on our curriculum soon.
As a homeschool family, we’re in the middle of the road from being super structured and loosey-goosey.
Monday
This day is reserved for family time. And when I say ‘family time,’ I mean my husband gets the orders to take the kids for several hours some where so I can be alone and not hear noise for just a short period of time.
Yes, we take Monday’s off. One of the reasons for us homeschooling is so my husband could actually see his kids. He’s got a great job, but he’s in entertainment and has only Monday and Tuesday off. It’s been like this for years!
So..Monday’s are either a makeup work day, a family day or ‘Dear Husband of mine, take the kids somewhere so I can be alone’ day.
Tuesday
Our Tuesday’s are normal school days. Each kid has a planner I generally put together (when I have my act together) and a majority of the 6th grader and 4th graders work is pretty independent. They can do on their own, but we review together or do together, depending on what the subject is. Our core curriculum is Trail Guide To Learning and this is a curriculum my older two and I do together. It has a lesson plan for the 4th grader and one for the 6th grader, but we’re learning the same things at age appropriate levels. My 1st grader has a supplement that goes along with this and she’s involved in all of our aloud readings, so she’s getting a lot of information just by osmosis! This curriculum includes Social Studies, Geography, History, Science and Language Arts. We add math and a few other things on top of this.
The kids know we have park day with several of our homeschool friends on Tuesdays. So, they bust through their work so they can spend a few hours at the park.
The kids also have evening activities such as Hockey and Basketball on Tuesday’s and we head to Pasadena for a family Bible study on these evenings as well.
Subjects Studied Tuesday:
Bible
Math
History/Geography
Language Arts (Handwriting/Spelling/Grammar/Writing)

Periodic Table Cards…the best way to learn this difficult table!
Wednesday
Wednesdays are the busiest days for us. We pack a bag early in the morning to take our school work with us for the day, as we head out the door at 9am. However, sometimes my kids get up very early and they’re able to start work at 6:30 or 7am and can be done with all of their school work for the day by 9am.
On Wednesdays, we head to Home School Campus for a few classes (paid for by our Charter School) including:
Hands On Science for the 1st and 4th grader and Middle School Math for the 6th grader.
All three kids have Art Class (also paid for by our charter) with Hideki Okuda at Hideki-Juku here in Burbank.
The evenings are open unless a kid has a sport practice or game.
Subjects Studied Wednesday:
Bible
Math
History/Geography
Language Arts (Handwriting/Spelling/Grammar/Writing)
Science
Art
Thursday
Our Thursdays are normal school days, like Tuesdays.
Every other Thursday, The Burbank Nature Center hosts a great science class for the kids for $5. We try to get there when we can. And bonus…I can hike while they’re in class!
We have weekly guitar lessons for all three kids at Hollywood Guitar Ninjas here in Burbank. (Also paid for by our charter)
And again, unless we have sports or activities, we’re pretty open.
Subjects Studied Thursday:
Bible
Math
History/Geography
Language Arts (Handwriting/Spelling/Grammar/Writing)
Science
Guitar

We travel by car cross country every year. 6,000+ miles this summer. The most educational trips ever!
Friday
Friday’s are normal school days in the morning. We try to get all work done by 11am because we head to Home School Campus for a couple classes. My 6th grader has another Middle School Math class and my 4th grader takes the most amazing class he’ll tell you all about….Stop Motion Animation. He LOVES it. As in, plans his script for a full week before going to the class.
Fridays are our Girl Scout days for both my 6th grader and my 1st grader’s troop, which I’m a leader of.
Friday’s also have practice for something in the evening.
Subjects Studied Friday:
Bible
Math

My son dissecting an Owl Pellet
And I’m going to be really honest…we take A LOT of family field trips. We love being out of the house.
Sometimes we just make up the work or take it with us or…move on. **We will be doing an awesome study on The California Missions for my 4th grader this year…as this is customary for any 4th grader here in California. Do I have to do this? No..but since we love history so much and this is an important part of our Nation’s history, we will!
Our Weekends are normally very, very busy. With three kids and two to three sports, birthday parties, church and what not…we’re moving a lot. We’re a very busy homeschool family!
Wow! That’s a full schedule for sure! Thanks so much for sharing. I really did enjoy reading it especially since I’m getting closer to homeschooling my daughter…possibly after Christmas break if not sooner so this is very valuable and informative for me! My daughter is in 4th as well! Is your 4th grader a boy or girl? Do they love being home schooled? How long have they been home schooled?? Thanks again for all the great info!
It is a full schedule, indeed! I use it as a ‘guide’ because it just doesn’t always go the way I think it does. My 4th grader is a boy. All of my kids do like homeschooling. It’s more taxing on me than them! This is our second year homeschooling and they do like the freedom they have and all of the extra things we do!
