Disclosure: My children got their cute little hands on a sample set of these blocks to play and build with, in exchange
their my honest review. All opinions are my kids’ my own.
Math skills, imagination, creativity, problem solving, cooperation, language skills and the desire for lifelong learning.
You know what helps our kids accomplish this in early learning?
According to the National Association For The Education of Young Children, children should have “plenty of space and time to build and rebuild invented and familiar structures.”
The most simplest of toys for our children, might have the very biggest impact from infancy all the way up! Heck..I like playing with blocks too!
Like many of us, a local family understands this to be true.
They’ve taken it a step further.
Parents, Steven and Kristen Rho, had seen their “share of crappy, mostly plastic toys, lots of which end up in the trash.” It dawned on them that toys could be made better — with sustainable materials and with a kid’s development in mind. They couldn’t find that specific combination of educational and eco-friendly toys anywhere, so they started making the toys themselves!
Big Future Toys was born! (And so were Earthtiles)
Earthtiles are wooden magnetic building toys. They’re made from sustainably-sourced wood, which is great news for our kids and the world they inhabit.
Steve taught himself woodworking, bought a desktop CNC machine to cut the wooden pieces, and after a bunch of kid-testing and design iterations, they had the first prototype for Earthtiles.
“We designed these toys to encourage creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration — the most important skills for modern learning. We incorporated loads of feedback from kids, parents, and teachers to get everything right — the size, the feel of the wood, the strength of the magnets, and most importantly, the pure experience of building things.”
My two younger kids, ages 6 and 9 got to play with these and absolutely loved them. My son liked building the biggest home he could in as many ways as he could. And my daughter built homes for her Shopkins! All I know, is they were both sad when we needed to give the sample back! You can bet we will be supporting this company and getting one of these sets for ourselves when we can!
“We started out making Earthtiles by hand and have sold them in limited batches just for family and friends. We’re turning to Kickstarter now to raise funds for our initial factory order. We’re stoked about getting these out to many more families, and changing an industry that’s dominated by cheap, plastic stuff.”
