I discovered Rita’s Ice earlier this year and had no idea what I was in for. When I saw that you could get frozen custard mixed with frozen ice, I thought… “Now, why would anyone want to do that?!”
I mean, you’d ruin a completely good cup of frozen custard. Chocolate frozen custard to be exact.
I like all things chocolate. I joke with my family that if there is anything fruity or gummy or the exact opposite of chocolate in our house, I’d never touch it. And I don’t. I don’t get the frozen lemonades at the amusement parks. I don’t share skittles or gummy bears or anything disgusting like that.
If it doesn’t have chocolate…I’m just not interested.
So, let me tell you right now, there is not one single person more surprised by my favorite treat at Rita’s…than me.
We’ve been a few times and at first, I just asked for a cup of chocolate custard. Have you had custard?! It’s basically ice cream on steroids. (Personal opinion here…no scientific evidence) The addition of the egg yolk in this frozen treat makes it so creamy and thick…and oh, so good.
But, then I got curious. Why do people add frozen ice to custard? I asked the person serving us for a sample of what they thought was a great combination…maybe even something that was there most popular. I got a sample, because I’m not wasting a cup of anything when I could have had chocolate custard.
They came to me with this:
What is this, you ask?
This here is my absolute favorite thing in Rita’s.
Yes. I have chosen this now OVER chocolate custard every time.
This is mango ice and vanilla custard in a Gelati. A Gelati is a layered ice/custard dessert.
Mango. People, I’m choosing a fruity snack with VANILLA custard over my revered chocolate anything.
Even typing this, makes me wish they were open for breakfast. I never, ever thought I would like this. And what’s better than being surprised?! Nothing. This combination is perfect. Now, Rita’s has other ice flavors. They change daily, sometimes. But next time you step into Rita’s…ask for a sample of this. Just do it.
I highly encourage you to get creative at Rita’s…you never know what you might like!
