It started out as such a simple, beautiful Sunday morning.
Husband didn’t have to work, the sun was shining, I made a great breakfast and just as we were getting ready for Church… it started.
My eldest came in to the bathroom where I was getting ready, I mean, I had actually put on a nice dress and was doing my hair. This is huge. I smelled nice! I wanted others to see that I do, in fact, own more than just workout clothes.
“Mom, my head is really itchy. I mean really itchy.”
In my mind, I cut to that note home from school last week saying someone in the class had been found with lice and to check the kids. I did check her hair and I saw nothing. But…just to be sure, I grabbed a comb and starting making parts.
There were bugs. Actual bugs.
I called to my husband and said, “I think we have lice!”
I checked the other two kids… lice.
How did I not see this before?!
I told the family we weren’t going to Church and then I called a friend and explained why we wouldn’t be at their birthday party later that day.
Then, I called a few more friends who’ve been through this once or twice.
All of them, and I do mean all of them highly recommended getting a professional service to take care of this. Don’t waste your time..spend the money and have someone come to your home.
The service I decided upon was Lice Schmice in Glendale, just on the edge of Burbank. I called and the owner Angel answered and offered to either come to our home or we could pack up and head to the salon.
I chose to leave the house.
Since we had two hours before the appointment time, I started stripping beds, putting stuffed animals in garbage bags for outdoor storage and covered my kids’ scalps in olive oil. Angel suggested the olive oil to slow the bugs down a bit.
All was well until we were getting ready to leave. My husband called me over to look at my oldest daughters head.
I looked and what I saw were actual bugs heading for the hills. The adult lice in her hair were packing their bags and leaving her head, maybe the olive oil? Whatever the reason, there were probably 15 or 20 bugs running down her face. I tried to keep my composure and started picking, making any chimpanzee at the zoo proud.
My daughter started screaming, she could feel them and she was freaked out. We got in the van and drove as fast as we could to Angel.
They were so infested, the lice had been there anywhere from 6-8 weeks.SIX TO EIGHT WEEKS.
How.. HOW did I not see this?
My son hardly had anything, I had a few bugs myself and my husband, well, apparently bugs do not like his chemistry. He had nothing. Angel said that happens all the time. There is something about some people that lice do not like and they stay clear from.
Should I take this as a compliment? Maybe I’m nice, warm, friendly and completely irresistible?
We are free and clear…basically. Everything has been removed from our heads and we will go back for a check on Wednesday. I asked Angel, “Is this something I can adequately do at home? I have friends who take care of this at home.”
Her reply, ” Yes. You absolutely could, but it might take you longer. I have moms all the time take care of this at home and it can take a month of combing to get rid of them. And sometimes after a month, they still come to me when it’s not gone. We are thorough, and this just makes it easier for families.”
I said to her, “The school nurse checked the kids this week and my daughter was cleared. How did we all miss this?”
Her reply, “It happens all the time. School nurses, teachers, parents all miss this frequently. It’s easy to miss if you’re not trained to look for everything. We go into schools all the time to check classrooms and I have never, not once ever, since I’ve been doing this ever left a school having not found lice. There is always lice somewhere.”
Almost makes me want to put my kids in a bubble.
Almost. It’s inevitable, really. We live in a highly populated city. It’s just bound to happen once or twice…maybe more.
Here’s the crazy, crazy thing about home treatments. A New England Journal of Medicine study shows that more than 60% of lice are resistant to at least one common treatment. But in some states, including Florida, Texas and California, 100% of lice that were studied are resistant to the common prescribed treatment. That is our state right there….. the only way to get rid of the lice we have here is to hand pick them out of the hair and do your best to keep them away. Angel has some great tips on that, including a spray with lavender she sells. Lice hate the smell.
Dear scientists who study lice, thank you.
Here’s a list of information I received from Lice Schmice this week.
- Head lice do not carry disease
- Head lice are parasites that need human blood to live
- Nits are eggs that attach themselves to the hair shaft. They are hard to see because they are so small, and also because they can be confused with dandruff or shampoo residue
- A nit takes about a week to hatch into a baby louse called a nymph, which grows into an adult louse in about a week.
- A louse can survive up to 30 days in a persons hair
- An adult louse can lay 5 to 10 eggs a day, thereby causing an infestation quickly
- Getting head lice is not related to cleanliness or the person or their environment
As of today, day two, we’re still doing a ton of laundry. We are clear of all actual contaminating lice in all of our heads and we go back to Angel at Lice Scmice on Wednesday to check again
