Not like “Go Team” kind of fan…but ‘wow, thank you for our freedom’ kind of fan. My grandfather was 17 when he enlisted in the Navy. He had lied about his age to join a military he desperately wanted to join. He fought in one of the most amazing Pacific Battles in the war and he came home silent about it only to have 9 children, more grandchildren (myself included) than I can count right now and many great grandchildren.
He has left a legacy. He once said to me “Jessie, I’m not sure why you’re doing this.” And I replied, “Grandpa. If you hadn’t survived this attack, I wouldn’t be here.”
That is him on the cover of the DVD.
In 2004, I started a family project that turned into a 30 minute documentary. I wanted to share a story I had only heard wind of…a story, not unlike many WWII veterans, that was barely told due to the horrific nature of what was witnessed. Before my grandfather passed, shortly after my mother did, we held a Movie Premiere in an enourmous theatre in Maumee, Ohio. I had movie posters printed and he signed autographs for hours.
Laffey Men is dedicated to my Grandfather and all veterans of all wars.
