Disclaimer: I received a free service at this salon in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Except for how awesome my hair cut is…everyone has an opinion on that, and we all think it’s amazing.
Did you know we have a full-service salon here in Burbank that has been voted “Best In Burbank” for 10 years? And that, the owner of that salon has been voted “Best Stylist” almost all of those years too? Krimson Salon is the creation of Burbank Mom and Burbank native, Amanda D’Alfonzo. Amanda was one of those friends you had in childhood, who would do everyone’s hair for parties, dances and events. She knew from a very early age, this was what she was going to do.
And she’s completely rocked it.
Amanda opened Krimson in the location it’s in now, 11 years ago. Krimson is located at 3400 W. Burbank Blvd. She currently has 17 professional stylists working in her salon. Being a full-service salon, Krimson offers services from hair cut/style and extensions to manicure/pedicures, facials, traditional waxing and sugaring. I had to look up what sugaring is. Basically, sugaring is a more gentle way to wax. The wax is made from, well…sugar, and the benefit of this process is that the sugar clings to the hair, but not the skin. Whereas traditional wax, will adhere itself to your skin as well, so as to pull skin cells off while the hair is removed. Sugaring makes that process much more gentle. And it’s a waxing process that has been done for thousands of years. Sugaring is a Persian process of waxing that stared around 1900 B.C. and it’s believed that honey was used as the first sugaring agent.
When Krimson contacted me about coming in to try the salon, I had not had a hair cut in a year. One full year, people. Ok, so I have very curly hair that can hide this fact, quite well. But what’s most important to note here is my full lack of self-care. Does getting a hair cut mean I’m taking care of myself. Yes, absolutely.
I think part of the reason I shy away from a lot of hair cuts is, I’ve had some horrific cuts. I mean, cuts that made me look like mushrooms or a Q-tip. Horrific. Some people, as professional as they are, have no clue about cutting naturally curly hair. They don’t realize that if you cut 1 inch off of my hair, it will look like 3 inches when dry. This has just been my experience.
So, naturally, I’m reluctant to try new stylists. But in this year I’m truly devoting to taking care of myself much better than I have been. I emphatically said, “Yes! Cut my hair please!” And with that cut, Amanda herself was going to give me the partial highlights I’ve been also wanting to get.
Krimson is a Moroccan themed salon. The entryways are beautifully shaped and overall, it has a large, open floor plan. As I listened to Amanda tell me about the history of her life and the history of the business she created, it became apparent, she’s an exceptionally hard worker. This is true of all entrepreneurs I know whom have great success. They know where their talents lie, they work as many hours as needed to build it from the ground up and they don’t ever back down on their vision.
Tenacity, determination, sweat, perseverance and commitment. This is part of the equation for small business success. I could feel it inside the walls of this salon, and I liked it.
You know what else I liked? Walking in to see my friend Mary Murphy’s handmade products on the counter for sale. Mary is another Burbank Mom entrepreneur (Burbank’s full of them, if you didn’t know) who started Ryan and Wren. Oh goodness, you need to check her out on Etsy and Instagram. Krimson carries some of her beautiful products on hand, just FYI.
Ok, before I talk about the curls that have reappeared on my head, let’s talk about the highlights Amanda did for me. I’ve had highlights that made me look like I was a Zebra with stripes. I’m not even close to joking. It’s not like I distrust people…but, you know, experience trains us to expect certain things. With the highlights Amanda put in (like it was a walk in the park) I could barely tell there were actual highlights. And that my friend, is the sign of a brilliant colorist. My hair looks so incredibly natural. She took 3 minutes to welcome me, take my hair out of my ponytail, stand back and see what she was dealing with, and come back with the perfect color.
We talked about my curls and how we both know, the cut will make them or break them. I gave her license to cut as she see fit, with my only exception being, I want to keep my hair as long as I can. This statement alone makes me laugh, because I always wear my hair up anyway! Oh well, we’ve all got our crazy.
My cut was perfect. I never get a ‘blunt’ cut and she was a magician with the scissors. But even more important…and this is why I waited a full week to write this review…the product she used on my hair..Ahhhhhmazing. Again, I’m reluctant to try new things when it comes to my natural curls. I had been using one product for years and was very comfortable with it. She suggested something called Boing. The name makes sense…but will it work?
Yes. Yes, it does.
Amanda will surely become my new stylist.
(and my kids too)
Not only is this salon run extremely well and have great customer service..their prices actually surprised me…in a very good way. Crimson is located right on Burbank Blvd off Hollywood Way and is very easy to get to and find parking. This all matters to me too, as a busy mom.
Bottom line, if you’re looking for a new stylist, a new cut, color or highlight…I highly recommend trying Krimson.
Read my review here, check the reviews on Yelp, and you’ll see, no one is walking away unhappy.
