The newly constructed I-5 Empire Avenue Interchange in Burbank will open to traffic early Monday morning, Sept. 30. Monday night, three of the five I-5 ramps at Burbank Boulevard will close for long-term construction. The new Empire Interchange is a key part of the detours for the three closed ramps. The ramps are (1) the northbound I-5 loop off-ramp to westbound Burbank Blvd., (2) the southbound I-5 off-ramp to Burbank Blvd., and (3) the westbound Burbank Blvd. loop on-ramp to southbound I-5.

The Burbank Blvd. bridge over I-5 will remain open until early 2020, when demolition will begin. A new bridge will be constructed with a scheduled opening date in 2021.The scheduled completion of the entire I-5 project is in 2021.
I don’t know about you, but I’m very excited to see this Burbank Empire Interchange open! It will save us a lot of time. It will make up for all the years I’ve missed my little Lincoln Road Cut-through.
But then…there’s the closing of the Burbank overpass that we will have to deal with.
