Alligator bites with Boysenberry Aioli
So what exactly is a boysenberry? Well it’s a cross hybrid of a European Raspberry, a Common Blackberry, an American Dewberry and a Loganberry. I know what you’re thinking. What the heck is a Dewberry and a Loganberry! It doesn’t really matter…all that matters is that boysenberry tastes great in EVERYTHING!
During the festival the entire Ghost Town is turned into a berry heaven. Stands around every corner are dishing out fresh boysenberry infused foods that you can purchase either individually or through a tasting card. Their $25 tasting card gets you access to 6 dishes including Boysenberry BBQ Short Ribs, Spicy Boysenberry BBQ Wings, Fried Alligator Bites with Fries & Boysenberry Aioli, Boysenberry BBQ Meatballs, Boysenberry Panna Cotta with Almond Crumble and Boysenberry Dessert Flautas. We started the day with the flautas which was my favorite of the 6 dishes. Sprinkled with powdered sugar, these delectable desserts were crispy and warm on the outside with a cool boysenberry filling inside. I’ll never admit how many of them I ate..just know that I don’t regret it. The kids’ favorite was the alligator bites which really surprised me because they really don’t taste like chicken at all…more like if chicken and lobster got married and had a baby. I think they were just really excited to eat an animal they play with in the tub every night.
After a few taste tests we headed into the Ghost Town Toy Barn where there were several interactive activities including a berry picking race and actual pie making where kids can make their very own boysenberry tarts topped with whipped cream. My kids were most distracted by the racks of wooden guns of every shape, size and color. It was boy heaven and we most definitely left with more than one of them.
Our highlight of the day was the Boysenberry Pie eating contest which took place to kick off the festival. We watched the top major league eaters of the world compete for the pie eating championship and let me tell you when I say this was one of the weirdest and most entertaining things I have ever seen! If you ever get a chance to see a eating competition, do it! They had 8 minutes to throw down pounds of delicious and messy…VERY messy..boysenberry pie. I mean, have you ever seen the color of boysenberries? The competition was like a scene out of The Walking Dead and yet I just could not look away as their red stained faces and shirts devoured plate after plate. Joey Chestnut broke a world record eating 14.5 pounds and taking the championship for the second year in a row.
Don’t forget to bring a little boysenberry home with you. You can purchase everything from Boysenberry BBQ sauce to Boysenberry mustard to an actual boysenberry plant at the Ghost Town General Store. We got the BBQ sauce and I have already smothered it on my veggie burger, sweet potato fries, and the kids’ chicken nuggets. It’s the perfect combo of sweet and savory, and every time I take a bite it reminds me of all the fun memories we had at the Boysenberry Festival this year.
