Marina Del Rey Sport Fishing is our family go-to when it comes to getting out on the Pacific for some fresh dinner. In just a few weeks, my dad will be visiting from Northwest Ohio and I’m pretty sure we’ll be trying to squeeze in a fishing trip while he’s here.
I grew up in Michigan on the Great Lakes and feel incredibly privileged to have had Lake Erie as a character in my life. If you’ve been on a lake so big that you can’t see shore anywhere…you might be on a Great Lake. I’ve always loved fishing, but I especially love fishing with my dad. He’s been dropping lines in The Great Lakes for 40 years, and still does today. After retiring as a Toledo Firefighter, he opened a charter fishing business and now takes many families to see the beauty of Lake Erie, while hoping to get some fresh Lake Perch and Walleye.

And with Spring Break and Summer Vacation around the corner (seriously, how does this happen so fast), I want to tell you just 5 of the reasons you should get out on the water and book a fishing expedition with Marina Del Rey Sportfishing.
The Location.
Marina Del Rey Sport fishing is located…well, in Marina Del Rey. But getting in and out of the marina is very easy and it’s right off the freeway. Not only that, but there are so many things to do in MDR. We’ve found great places to have breakfast before the trip and one time I even snuck in a paddle boarding trip.
The Affordability.
In my honest opinion, the half day trip out with this company is very affordable. You can even choose what kind of boat you’d like to be on. They have a fleet of ships that can hold a large group down to a private charter for birthday parties or work events.
We normally go out on The New Del Mar, but last year we actually opted for a smaller trip and headed out on the Betty-O. You truly can’t go wrong. For example, a half day of fishing for an adult on The New Del Mar is only $55. That’s a fantastic price for such a great time.
The Experienced Crew.
Every crew member is there to make sure you get a great experience. From detangling fishing lines (that happens) to baiting your line and removing your fish for you, these guys are on your side. MDR Sport fishing also provides fishing reports so you can get a sense of when it would be a good time to go, based on what has been caught the day or two prior. Also, this crew will clean your fish for you on the trip back in…this is not free and tips are welcomed for all their hard work. (And they’ve earned it, you’ll see)
The Sights & Wildlife.
I don’t know how much fishing I actually get done when I’ve always had so many dolphins distracting me!! The last trip we took, we were surrounded by what seemed to be thousands of them. They served int he wake of the boat. And the California shoreline, the brown pelicans and the Pacific Ocean. I mean, I honestly don’t care most of the time how much fish I catch, the sights, sounds and smells are enough for me.
Everyone Is Welcome.
You’ve never fished before? That’s seriously okay. I mean this is a really fun adventure to try if you’ve never done it, but don’t let that stop you! It doesn’t matter if you’re a local, a tourist, a family, flying solo, have kids or a very serious beginner, there’s a kind of fishing for everyone. And the best part is, if you end up catching absolutely nothing…they make sure you don’t go home empty handed.
